Original Manuscript Penmanship Notebook

Bath, ME: 1832. Oblong octavo (17.5cm.); original blue side-stitched wrappers; [26]pp.; filled to completion. Old vertical fold, some soil to wrappers and textblock, rear wrapper a bit worn with small coin-sized loss at top edge, else Very Good, internally fresh and ink unfaded. Item #1229

Penmanship practice notebook, each page divided into four columns, some of these used to practice specific words (ambidextrous, disseminate, Pennsylvania, thermometer, contentment, Mahalaleel, etc.), while other leaves are devoted to repeating the same sentence, such as "A sentence is an assemblage of words forming complete sense," or "Learning is the ornament of youth and comfort of age." Our personal favorite, however, is "For value recd. I promise to pay Geo. W. Chamberlin on his order ninety nine thousand nine hundred & ninety nine dollars on demand."
