35 mois de campagne en Chine, au Tonkin: Courbet-Rivière (1882-1885)

Paris: Librairie d'Education nationale, Alcide Picard, ca. 1900. Quatrième édition, large 4to, pp. 324; plain woodcut frontispiece, 4 plates, text illustrations and maps throughout, many full-page; original red cloth gilt; some fraying to edges and spine head, occasional spotting, pages uniformly toned; very good and sound. Forms part of the Collection Picard, Bibliothèque Coloniale et de Voyages.

Quite an impressively diverse account of the indigenous culture in French Indochina, as well as the events of the Tonkin Campaign and the Sino-French War, dating from just before the death of Henri Rivière (1827-1883) to that of Amédée Courbet (1827-1885). ["May the reader accompany me in his imagination from the streets of Hanoi, where we may linger together; to Nam-dinh... Throughout, we'll take a look at the Annamite population, a population of children..." (my translation)]. Item #598
