Les Cerfs-Volants [Inscribed & Signed]

Paris: Gallimard, 1980. First Trade Edition. Octavo (20cm); publisher's cream card wrappers printed in red and black; 369pp. Some minor foxing and tiny soil spot to rear cover, else Very Good to Near Fine. Inscribed with an autograph quote signed by Gary on half title addressed to Edmond and another (illegible)--does not appear to be in the author's mother tongue, Lithuanian but rather Polish. A novel of a love affair thwarted by the start of World War II, the last to be published during the author's lifetime--Gary would die in December that same year, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Gary was awarded the Prix Goncourt twice, the first as Gary in 1956 for his novel Les Racines du Ciel, and again in 1975, as Emile Ajar, for La Vie Devant Soi, making him the only author to be awarded the prize under two different pseudonyms.
